Facebook challenge Google for the “ad giant” title

by admin on June 7th, 2010
Since the first quarter of 2009, Facebook has quadruple the number of advertisers on the arena, doubled their selling department, and crossed the magical limit of 500 million registered users. Facebook is the fastest growing online plattform for advertising today and is ahead of Yahoo as well as Microsoft. In the running towards becoming the world’s number one ad-plattfrom, Facebook challenge Google with a slightly different take the market.
Google’s strength is to match search results to ad-offers and to run consumers as close to a purchase as possible. Facebook, on the other hand, focuses on ads that generate demand and strengthen the relations to the brand.
The graphics below roughly illustrates Facebook’s take on the ad market today and how they estimate demand for advertising to be 10 – 11 times bigger than search engine advertising. Today Google owns the bottom part of the funnel while Facebook dominates the upper part with features such as the “Like-button” and the Open Graph concept.

This kind of brand presence gives Facebook the advantage for now, but as with all forms of growing advertising the development will most likely make Facebook users experience advertising overload in the same way that they currently do with TV commercials, traditional display banners, or direct email marketing. This will make it even more important to have a clear strategy for your brand’s Facebook presence and that you make sure to focus on providing truly relevant marketing initiatives that are engaging and provide value for consumers.
